Every morning my son Nathaniel gets up early and goes into the kitchen to get his "mail."
Which consists of a nice little treat AND a positive note of encouragement mommy has left him for the day. This is such a powerful little tradition that is speaking volumes to him now and in the future.
I believe there are two great lessons he is gleaning from his mail.
First, it gives him something to look forward to. A reason to get out of bed. He wakes up very very early long before anyone else is up to "sneak" into the kitchen to see what wonderful delight the mailman (mommy) has deposited for him. He then sneaks back to his room where he indulges in his mail. He looks forward to this so much that he just can't wait. He is filled with anticipation and greatly looks forward to what is in store for him. This is a teaching point that translates into life. We are drawing the parallel that he has something to look forward to in life. That life is a great big adventure. An adventure in which he has a major role to play. An adventure that will consist of many exciting, yet challenging events...something to look forward to!
Secondly, we are shaping his inner voice. It is never too early to speak blessings and life over our children, our family, our friends, and so forth. I know the positive messages of love and acceptance that my wife communicates in her little "letters" to Nathaniel are shaping the heart and mind of a great leader. The mailbox is a tool that my wife is using to form a positive self-image. A tool that slowly but surely is creating a positive attitude and outlook on himself and others. It is teaching him to be optimistic and to possess an "I can" attitude.
It makes me wonder about all the little things that people do to make a difference. I would love to hear some of them.
The mailbox just reminds me that is it the small things that make the biggest difference!
