My wife shared this quote with me today by Steve Jobs. The more I thought about it the more this thought began to resonate with me. In a society and culture driven so much by success, position, and money, if we aren't careful we will forget the true secret to greatness. Of course we all want our children and students to be successful, get a good education, and have the best quality of life, but if we never encourage others to follow their heart true greatness will always be just out of reach. It is in following the heart that we find fulfillment and enjoyment. The heart represents that which is closest to us...the center of who we are. Following the heart will ignite passion in us and enable greatness in whatever we do. If we only push our kids to follow their head and what makes sense by society's standards, they will just be settling...and when they settle their greatest potential as a person, a professional, and a citizen will remained untapped. So stop! Think about what you love doing. Ask yourself, "what will be my mission in life?" Develop a vision and plan to join what you love and what you actually do. Reality says that all of us have parts of our jobs that we don't necessarily "enjoy", BUT the parts that we love...the parts that inspire us and motivate us...these are the parts that become the heartbeat of our work and define our greatness personally and professionally. So follow the heart...
